The Sea Woman, Scottish Folktale Art, Selkie Portrait

Today's illustration was inspired by the Scottish Folktale, "The Sea Woman". It's about a mythical Selkie (Seal Woman) who was captured by a fisherman while being caught in her woman costume. He hides her sealskin from her for years as they live a "happy" life together on the island.

To get by, the woman visits her Seal family everyday yearning to one day return to them, knowing she cannot return without her seal skin which her husband is still constantly hiding from her. She has become hopeless and thinks she will never return to the sea until the day her son finds the seal skin and shows her what amazing thing he found.

She grabs it from him with hardly a goodbye and returns to the sea.

The original hand drawn and painted illustration was created by me (Debra Styer) with watercolor and gouache.

This includes a antique white mat for easy framing into a 8x10 frame.

The print will be shipped to you in a protective sleeve with extra backing in a sturdy flat mailing envelope.

All prints are signed and numbered.
