James Baldwin Portrait

My illustrated ode to the incredible writer, social critic and a civil and gay rights activist James Baldwin!

Title: "Baldwin's Room"

Best known for his essays, as collected in Notes of a Native Son (1955) and his book "Giovanni's Room", (where he explores his being a gay man in Paris in the 1950's). Baldwin is as a writer who speaks of the harsh realities of being an African American man in the 20th century.

Although Baldwin died more than thirty years ago, his writing speaks of today's world. I hope his work becomes part of the American literary canon.

"Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced."

James Baldwin

The original illustration was hand drawn and painted by me (Debra Styer) with watercolor and gouache.
